This bay was once home to the legendary pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O'Malley). An unclear number of tiny small islands (so called Drumlins) made this an ideal safe haven for the queen to hide from her enemies. According to legend, there are 365 islands in Clew bay, one for each day of the year. Croagh Patrick – Irelands sacred mountain – towers over the bay.

Bought in 1967 for the sum of £1,700, John Lennon planned to turn the remote island of Dorinish in Clew Bay into a hideaway retreat, shortly before he was shot dead. Described by Yoko Ono as “ a place where we thought we could escape the pressures and spend some undisturbed time together “.
